Inversions/headstand

Senior yoga teacher at Kaya Health Clubs Monica Aurora provides the following guidance for performing headstands/inversions, a popular yoga pose

Inversions/headstand - Yoga moves - IMAGE - Women's Health & Fitness

Inversions/headstand:

A headstand is an advanced inversion pose that should be learnt under the guidance of a teacher. However, the benefits of inversions can be obtained from simply lying on your back with your legs up the wall.  “There are three main factors that will prevent you from doing a headstand: flexibility, strength and fear of standing on your head. Standing on our heads can be very frightening and also potentially harmful. Aurora suggests those who attempt headstand should take measures of caution and proceed slowly so they do not injure themselves.

Physical benefits:

Inversions help to improve balance and strengthen muscles around the core, shoulders and arms. Inverting the body with the head below the heart increases blood flow to the brain. Each inversion has a diagnosed energetic benefit; some are energising while others are relaxing. This increase in blood and therefore oxygen to the brain can bring about an increase in alertness.

Mental benefits:

Heating inversions (such as hand or headstands) tend to awaken and energise whereas cooling types (such as shoulder stands and legs up the wall) tend to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and can be used to induce a feeling of calm.

“Inversions tend to be quite fun. Children do them naturally and most adults enjoy the journey back to the fun activities of their childhood,” Dr Watkins says. At the same time, they’re often psychological challenging and in that sense can help to build confidence and sense of achievement.

Instructions:

Advanced yoga practitioners can follow Aurora’s guide to completing inversions.

1. Come into kneel close to a wall. To find the correct position for the elbows, grab hold of the opposite elbow with each hand.

2. Keep the elbows at this width (approximately shoulder distance apart) and interlace your hands into a loose, basket-like grip. Then place the back of the hands one foot away from the wall.

3. From a kneeling position, tuck the chin into the chest and place the back of your head into your hands.

4. Press into the feet and lift the hips up, as if to come into downward facing dog with the head on the floor.

5. Walk the feet into the elbows or as close as you can get. When you are ready, bend one knee and draw it into the chest.

6. To proceed, draw the second knee into the chest, then send both soles of the feet to the wall above the head. Continue lifting out of the forearms to float the shoulders away from the ears.

7. The legs can extend up the wall when you are confident with the strength in your shoulders and hip strength.

Yoga pose: Reclining bound angle pose

This yoga pose (also known as Supta Baddha Konasana) is beneficial for women in all cycle changes, from relieving menstrual pain to improving circulation in the ovarian region, and can be helpful during pregnancy and menopause.

Yoga pose: Reclining bound angle pose – PICTURE – Women's Health & Fitness

What it does:

Regulates blood pressure as it encourages the relaxation response. It can also help with indigestion, flatulence and sciatic pain. It is beneficial for women in all cycle changes, from relieving menstrual pain to improving circulation in the ovarian region, and can be helpful during pregnancy and menopause.

It also opens across the front of the chest, opening the heart and energising the body.

What you’ll do:

Lying with your ribs and torso supported by a stack of books, a pillow or anything around the house you feel comfortable on, either rest your hands above your head or beside your torso. Placing them above your head adds a stretch into the front of the shoulders.

You can place as much support under your back as you need, but allow your hips to be a few inches away from pillows to allow the lumbar spine to realise and the stomach to relax.

Place your feet together, your knees out wide and then simply close your eyes, breathe and let go.

If pregnant, additional blankets may be placed like stairs in a graduated support for the spine, placing the mum in a less horizontal position and ensuring the baby is not putting too much pressure on the vena cava.

You can add as many props as you need depending on the flexibility of the spine. If the groin is tight, place pillows under your knees.

Yoga (asanas) 'interrupts stress response'

Certain yoga postures (asanas) and breathing techniques have been shown to interrupt the stress response.

de-stress-asanas

Albert Einstein said problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them, yet the contemporary cult of cognition, in which the rational mind is tipped as a kind of Swiss army knife, has fostered a belief that we – beings distinguished from animals by our ability to reason – should be able to reckon our way out of mental distress.

Increasingly, however, science is recognising that the best way to fight physiological responses, such as the symptoms of stress, is via the bodymind.

What is stress?

While stress starts out as a thought in response to an event or circumstance, it swiftly dominoes into an involuntary physiological response. What you feel when your jaw aches from grinding your teeth on deadline or when the relos invite themselves for Christmas lunch indicates that you’re operating in danger mode.

“When we are in a stressed state, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is in control,” says Melbourne-based yoga teacher Phoebe Waters (pictured). “This is known as the fight or flight response; the pace of our breath becomes short and fast and the body becomes prepared for intense physical activity, increasing our heart rate and blood pressure.”

How to de-stress with yoga

The way to restore calm, then, is coaxing the body to drop the stress response. Certain yoga postures (asanas) and breathing techniques have been shown to interrupt the stress response.

When the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), known as the rest and digest state, is in control, heart rate and blood pressure is lowered and breathing slows down. It’s a bit like putting the car in reverse.

“During yoga you can consciously stimulate your PNS by practising basic breath awareness with slow, even inhalations and exhalations in and out of the nose.”

Practising yoga could also guard against stress-related nervous system imbalances according to a research review published in journal Medical Hypotheses. Patients with stress-related psychological and medical conditions such as depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and cardiac disease could benefit from yoga in conjunction with standard treatments, psychiatry researchers reported.

Case study

An earlier study found that subjects who practised yoga for 12 weeks logged increased levels in gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), which is often low in patients with anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder, while a walking group had no GABA spike.

Whether you’re a yoga novice or Ashram regular, combining these postures with slow, conscious breathing will lower the body’s stress response. Remember to adjust and support your pose in response to how your body feels. You should never feel pain.

How to get silent mode on Galaxy Note 4, Note 3 and S4 with Lollipop

As you undoubtedly know, Google decided to remove silent mode in Android 5.0 Lollipop and replace it with a concept called interruptions. The idea is that you set priority interruptions for certain times of day and so on, which sounds nice, but sometimes you really just want the simplicity of good old fashioned silence. The Galaxy S5 has had mute mode returned to it, but the Galaxy Note 4 and Note 3 are still waiting. Here’s how to get silent mode on Android Lollipop for Galaxy devices.

silent mode note 4
Even without a patch from Samsung you can enable mute mode on Galaxy devices with Lollipop.

Previously when you kept dropping the volume down it would eventually go to vibrate only and then silent mode. Not anymore with Lollipop. But it is still possible to silence your Galaxy device with Lollipop, it’s just a little less intuitive. I’ve tested this on the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 3, but it should also work on the Galaxy S4. I’ll assume Sasung will eventually patch these devices like they did the Galaxy S5 and bring mute mode back as a simple toggle action.

Note: This trick disables all sounds and vibrations, including incoming calls and alarms, so if you make use of it, be sure you’re happy to potentially sleep in and miss work because you didn’t hear your alarm or the boss man calling you.

AndroidPIT Galaxy Note 4 Android 5 0 Lollipop vibrate silent
If you volume down all the way you’re still stuck with vibrations (left), but with this simple trick you’ll have blessed silence again (right).

How to get silent mode on Galaxy devices with Lollipop

You want to bring up your full Quick Settings menu for this. So either swipe down on the home screen with two fingers, or once to get to your notifications and then tap the ”list” button on the top right hand corner to bring up all your Quick Settings toggles.

At the top you’ll see the icon for sound or vibrate. At the bottom you’ll see a star icon – this is the interruptions icon. If it isn’t a star, it might be a circle with a horizontal dash in it and ”All” written underneath it. Tapping this cycles through your interruption settings.

ANdroidPIT Galaxy Note 4 Android 50 Lollipop notifications sound interruptions
See what happens when you toggle the interruptions to None? The Sound toggle grays out. That means silent.

If you tap the star icon until it has the circle and line with ”None” written underneath it, you’ll notice that the sound/vibrate icon at the top has now lost it’s color. This means that you will now have silent mode with no vibrations either.

If you now go to Settings > Sounds and Interruptions you’ll see that the symbol on the left of the Ringtone and System sliders are crossed out. Previously, these would have been crossed out but with zigzag lines on either side, which means that sounds are off but vibration is active. Now you have no sounds an d no vibration.

AndroidPIT Galaxy Note 4 Android 5 0 Lollipop sounds vibrate silence
On the left you can see you’ve still got vibrations on, but with Interrruptions set to none you have no sounds and no vibrations (right). Not even alarms, so be warned.

Are these the free earphones you'll get with the Galaxy S6?

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has to be one the most leaked devices in smartphone history and, with just two days left to wait until the official unveiling… we have yet another leak.

This time though, it’s nothing to do with the phone itself, but the bundled earphones buyers can expect to receive.

The images were picked up by Vietnamese mobile site Tinhte, and depict earbuds expected to come free with both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. And for those who think they look like Apple’s Earpods, look again. Samsung’s have a flat ribbon cable, Apple’s feature a more rounded affair. Huge difference.

In the image below, Samsung’s are on the left, and Apple’s are on the right.

It’s also been rumoured that Samsung has collaborated with Sennheiser to produce the bundled buds, but the images in question show no signs of Sennheiser branding, so we’re taking that one with a pinch of salt for now.

We’ll know everything there is to know about the Galaxy S6, and its earphones come Sunday. ‘Til then.

New Nexus phone might have separate LG and Huawei models, suggests report

We heard rumblings last year that the Google-branded Nexus smartphone line had seen its last days, but the Nexus 6 (pictured) proved that false. And now there’s word on what to expect from the next entry.

A report from Weibo (spotted by TechRadar) suggests that Google will offer two different models of the next Nexus phone: a high-end version made by LG, much like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, but also a less capable and surely cheaper edition from a Chinese manufacturer.

That report suggests that the unnamed maker of the low-end phone may opt to use its own system-on-a-chip to power the device, and TechRadar figures that Huawei is the only company that currently meets those distinguishers.

It may be some time before we know anything: the Motorola-made Nexus 6 just released in October, and it seems unlikely that we’ll see another model before autumn. And whatever comes of this, it’s unlikely to be called the “Nexus 7,” seeing as Google and Asus already released a pair of tablets under that name. It’ll be time to finally shake up the naming scheme, it seems.

Splitting the annual Nexus release between two different handsets would be new, but there’s sense to be made here. After all, the Nexus 6 opted to be big and expensive, while previous Nexus phones aimed to deliver flagship quality at more approachable prices. Having a pricey flagship and a less-equipped contemporary would potentially appease more consumers.

Watch out Apple, the Swiss are making their own smartwatches

It seems that Apple and Google may have a bit of a fight on their hands for smartwatch supremacy.

MMT (Manufacture Modules Technologies), creator of the MotionX Horological Smartwatch Open Platform, has announced it’s signed three new Swiss watchmaking partners.

The brands: Mondaine, Frederique Constant and Alpina, will offer ten different models, for both men and women. They’ll all use the MotionX platform, which records activity and monitors sleep 24/7. Recorded activity information is displayed on the watch face via dials, rather than digital screens on Google’s Android Wear watches or the Apple Watch, placing them firmly in the same camp as the Withings Activité Pop.

Users of the Swiss watches will be able to sync information with an iOS or Android app, which shows off how much they’ve moved or slept during the day, week or month.

So the question you’ll now need to ask yourself, is whether you go with classic, more simplistic horological watches like these, or side with Apple and Google and strap on what is essentially a shrunken smartphone to your wrist.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen a Swiss watch manufacturer enter the smartwatch market. The Montblanc e-Strap has a module that attaches to your current watch, and displays notifications, as well as activity information, on an OLED display.

As for us? We’re sticking to our plain old non-smart £1,000,000 Patek Philippe timepieces, thank you very much.

(We wish).

Samsung Galaxy S6 leaked again – this time with official pictures

Want to see some more images of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge? No? What do you mean, you’ve already seen 300 blurry-ass photos of this unreleased phone before breakfast

It’s time to look at another one, I’m afraid – but at least this one is definitely the real deal.

Yes, it’s an official promotional shot of Samsung’s upcoming flagship range, the curved-screen Galaxy S6 Edge and the, er, not-curved-screen Galaxy S6. It was posted to the Sprint subreddit by someone who apparently works for the US mobile network (but maybe not for much longer!), and it shows off the phones – or at least the top two-thirds of them – in a dark (possibly black, possibly charcoal grey) finish with metal edging.

They look exactly like the rest of the leaked images of the Samsung Galaxy S6 you’ve seen. Presumably there’s a home button down at the bottom.

We don’t think this phone, possibly the most leaked handset in history, can have all that many surprises left to show us, but if it does we’ll find out on Sunday, when Samsung is all set to give both S6 models their official unveiling at its pre-MWC 2015 press conference. Join us there, won’t you?

Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf (2015)

Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf

Aston Martin announced that the luxurious new Lagonda super saloon will be made available, in strictly limited numbers, to more customers around the world.

Aston Martin will now accept orders for the Lagonda Taraf – the latest in a proud line of saloons revered worldwide as ‘the finest of fast cars’ – from prospective owners in more major markets. It is now available to clients in EU legislation-compliant Continental Europe, the United Kingdom and South Africa, with the Lagonda Taraf now re-engineered to be available in either left or right-hand drive.

CEO, Dr Andy Palmer said: “Opening up the Lagonda Taraf to an increased number of customers around the world was a high priority for me as soon as I joined Aston Martin late last year. I wanted to be able to offer this exceptional saloon to the potential owners from around the globe who have been enquiring about it, and I’m very happy that we have been able to expand the Lagonda proposition.”

Initially available only to buyers in the Middle East, where it was launched in Dubai in late 2014, the Lagonda Taraf is being built in a strictly limited small series of no more than 200 cars.

The return of Lagonda follows in the wake of other bespoke special projects by Aston Martin such as the creation of the extreme Aston Martin Vulcan supercar, Vantage GT3 special edition, One-77, V12 Zagato and the CC100 Speedster Concept.

Based on the brand’s almost infinitely flexible VH architecture, the saloon draws inspiration from the highly sought-after William Towns-designed Lagonda of 1976 and features many of the same cutting edge engineering techniques seen in modern Aston Martin sports cars, such as the extensive use of carbon fibre body panels.

The car is hand-built by the finest craftsmen and women at Aston Martin’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Gaydon, Warwickshire, in a dedicated building previously given over to the creation of the One-77 supercar.

The 6.0-litre V12-engined super saloon is being offered to clients through Aston Martin’s VIP sales programme with precise pricing details remaining confidential, and likely to be significantly different in each case due to very high levels of bespoke content. Naturally, each Lagonda customer will have the option of ensuring their car is truly unique by personalising it via the popular Q by Aston Martin bespoke service.

Dr Palmer said: “As a result of today’s announcement we anticipate very quick expressions of interest from customers around the world, many of whom will want to add Lagonda to their luxury and sports car collections. Aside from its confident style, many buyers will also recognise this Lagonda Taraf as a piece of automotive history, following in the tracks of its distinguished predecessor the William Towns Lagonda. I’m also particularly pleased that we have been able to engineer Lagonda for right-hand drive markets meaning, of course, that I’m sure we will see the car in use on Aston Martin’s ‘home ground’ of the UK in due course.”

Step 1. The first step is to select the software or application for which you want to make custom Run command. For example, let us consider Google Chrome as the example here. Remember, you can choose any application other than which is already there in the Run command.

Step 2. In the second step, right click on the desktop of your computer system and make a new shortcut.

Right click > New > Shortcut

Step 3. As you select the Shortcut option in the 2nd Step, it will open up a dialog box. And, the dialog box will ask you path of the application or software for which you want to create the Run command.

Step 4. Now, you need to browse through the files and choose the one that shows “chrome.exe”. Well, it is quite obvious that all the executable files can be found in the C drive (or wherever the Operating System has been installed), inside the folder “Program Files”. For example, “C:\Program Files\Google Chrome\chrome.exe

Step 5. Once you are done with Step number 4, just click on “Next” button and simply provide a relative name to that shortcut. Remember, the same name will be used later in the Run command.

For example, “GC” for Google Chrome

Step 6. Now, click on the “Finish” button. Once it is done, an icon related to that application or software will show up on your computer’s screen. It means that the process of creating shortcut has been done successfully.

Step 7. In this step, just cut and paste that recently made shortcut icon into your computer’s root drive, in its Windows folder.

For example, C:\ Windows , Make sure you are the administrator of the computer or have its password.

Step 8. Now, you are done with the set up and can run the application through Run Command. Just go to Run and enter the keyword “GC”, and Google Chrome will begin executing.

Google Tells Cities To Greet Google Fiber With Open Arms Or 'Enjoy Your Time Warner Cable'

It’s hard to imagine a city not rolling out the red carpet for Google Fiber, the broadband service that boasts Internet speeds of up to 1000Mbps. But that’s exactly what’s happening, a Google executive said at a conference this week. Suggesting that Google is fed up with the resistance, VP of Access Services Milo Medin gave cities an ultimatum: warm up to Google Fiber, or we’ll leave you out in the cold.

What’s frosting Google Fiber is that even the cities that are glad to receive Google Fiber are making the process slow by being inflexible when it comes to red tape. In particular, Google Fiber feels that it’s too cool for fax machines, which are a staple of city bureaucracies. Given Google’s role in shaping technology, it’s not surprising that it would balk at the idea of faxing documents, but the “take it or leave it” attitude is bad news for citizens who want the high speed broadband.

Google Fiber is expanding Gigabit broadband, but grappling with red tape.

Google is moving into cities across the U.S. Image credit (all images): Google

Medin is showing no mercy, though. “If you make it easy, we will come,” he said at the conference in Washington, D.C., according to Gigaom.  “If you make hard, enjoy your Time Warner Cable.” Pow! You know your customer satisfaction record could use some improvement when others companies are using you as a threat.

At the moment, Google Fiber is in (or coming to) Atlanta, GA, Austin, TX, Charlotte, NC, Kansas City, KS, Nashville, TN, Provo, UT and Raleigh-Durham, NC. It has plans to move into several more cities in the near future, including Phoenix, AZ, Portland, OR, and San Antonio, TX, among others – assuming they’re willing to cut some of the red tape.

Gadget Ogling: Scooting Around, Scratching Wood, Knocking on Doors

Salutations, travelers, and welcome to a new iteration of Gadget Dreams and Nightmares, the column that hoists up quality new gadgets for the world to see and condemns those that don’t cut the mustard.

Among the items on our sandwich board this week are a suitcase with extra zip, the new Pebble smartwatch, a groovier turntable, and a smartlock with a twist.

As ever, the ratings on each item mean nothing — other than to denote how interested I am in using the product — because these are not reviews.

Scooting Away

Even for someone endlessly in awe of our ability to traverse continents in just a few hours, traveling is increasingly a chore. Anything I can add to trips to make them even a touch more enjoyable is nothing to sniff at.

Coolpeds’ briefcase e-scooter (pictured above) — a suitcase with a built-in, motorized scooter — may be just what I need to freshen up journeys.

It’s just as well there’s a built-in transport system on this, given the suitcase alone weighs a whopping 17.4 pounds. It might be carry-on size, but that’s certainly far beyond your typical carry-on luggage weight.

On the positive side, the scooter can transport you up to six miles on one charge at speeds of up to 12.4 mph. There’s a solar-powered model as well, presumably to encourage those who live in locales that are frigid this time of year to take a vacation.

I look forward to the day when I can zoom around airports. I can’t wait for the day I crash into knees as I careen along train aisles.

Until then, you’ll find me carting my boring old case around the terminal, feverishly anticipating the days of lazier international transit.

Smooth Pebble

I’ve mentioned before my ambivalence towards smartwatches, but my cynicism is taking a dent thanks to the new Pebble Time.

With a color e-paper screen taking over from the e-ink original, it’s got a little more visual verve. Add to that a microphone for voice replies to notifications and the hardware’s had a serious improvement.

What’s most interesting is the timeline interface, which arranges nuggets of information from your apps into a cohesive, single view. It’s a compelling way of presenting disparate data from across a multitude of sources in a way that makes sense on a small display.

I like Pebble a bunch. Among other things, the understated design and week-long battery life make me far more amenable to it than many other smartwatches. Based on what I know of each, I’m more inclined to pick up a Pebble Time than an Apple Watch.

Groovy Turntable

As if a turntable weren’t enough to denote someone as a bit of a hipster in 2015, here’s a version that adds an artisanal spin.

Audiophiles with an affinity for the outdoors may enjoy the Silvan Audio Workshop’s range of wood turntables. They’re all handcrafted, with the electronics provided by high-end audio manufacturer Rega, so the sound quality should be good.

There’s actually a purpose to the wood body of these turntables that goes beyond the aesthetic: They apparently help stabilize records so they don’t skip while you’re dancing around your living room.

I can’t say I’m desperate to rush out and contribute to the Silvan Audio Workshop’s crowdfunding campaign to make sure I get one of these. The wood finish rankles me a little.

I enjoy the woodsy aesthetic for the most part, and my mind frequently wanders back to Bang and Olufsen’s gorgeous BeoSound Moment tablet-esque music controller, which has a pristine wooden finish.

Silvan’s products aren’t quite what I’d want to have taking up prime home real estate, even if there is vast potential for great puns when playing records from Wye Oak, Screaming Trees or Woody Guthrie.

Open Sesame

Smartlocks nestle just below smartwatches on the list of gadgets that don’t inherently interest me. However, Sesame is trying an approach that differs from the typical Bluetooth door keys.

Owners instead will use a specific knock on either their door or smartphone. A WiFi model enables remote access and a way to determine which friends are allowed inside. The knock-and-enter feature is enough of a quirk to set Sesame apart from the pack.

What happens when a nosy neighbor figures out how to open the door by listening in on your special knock? You’d best hope that person has poor rhythm or an inability to recreate your unique series of door taps, else your lock might not be so smart after all.

Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop problems and how to fix them

The Galaxy Note 3 has now been running Android 5.0 Lollipop long enough for the first problems and bugs to start making their presence known. Here are the solutions, fixes and improvements for the most common Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop problems.

AndroidPIT Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop
Lollipop on the Galaxy Note 3 has brought some problems with it.

Bad battery life

Updates quite often bring about massive battery drain. The good news is this is almost always just temporary and can be easily fixed with a factory reset. First of all though, make sure you have a full backup of your apps and data (we recommend Helium because it doesn’t require root access).

How to recover deleted text messages from an Android smartphone

If you’ve accidentally deleted text messages by mistake, fret not! You can get lost SMS back with a 99% chance of success, but there’s one ingredient that is most important: time! If you’ve deleted your SMS inbox you have to act quick, because the messages are only recoverable until the portion of memory on which they are saved is rewritten. So the longer you wait the higher the likelihood of getting new text messages, app updates or who-knows-what saved to the same location, obliterating them forever. Here’s how to recover lost text messages on Android.

How to fix your APN settings for all US and UK networks

Most of the time, the APN (Access Point Name) settings on your Android device are one of those extremely important things to the daily use of your phone (specifically, connecting to the internet) that you’ll never need to think about – let alone mess around with. In this article, we show you how to reset your Android APN settings or, if that fails, manually enter APN settings using our lists of APN settings for every major phone carrier in the US and UK.
andrdoipit wi fi android
Your APN settings need to be in order if you want to get this little guy online

Your APN is the means by which your phone’s data connection communicates with internet-based services such as  such as 3G, 4G, MMS, and so on. Your APN settings are usually automatically provided by your mobile operator and set by your phone, but sometimes this doesn’t work, in which case you’ll have to take matters into your own hands if you want to carry on sending MMS messages and using the internet.

Reset your APN settings to default

If your mobile internet or MMS messaging services cut out, you may need to fix your APN settings.

First, go to Settings on your Nexus device, then tap More, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. If you have a Samsung device, tap Settings, ‘More networks’, ‘Mobile networks’, then Access Point Names. Reaching your APN settings will be similar on other Android devices.

You should now see a list of the APN settings on your phone. Tap the Settings button, then ‘Reset to default’. Next, go back into Access Point Names, and your network’s APN settings should soon reappear and work properly. If it doesn’t, restart your device and you should receive Service Update settings from your network provider.

Manually enter your network’s APN settings

If that trick fails to jumpstart your internet and MMS services, then you may need to manually enter your network’s APN settings into your phone. These vary from network to network, so take a look at our list showing the APN settings of all the major carriers in the US and UK:

Creating a new APN

If you’re using a Nexus device, go to Settings, then tap More, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names, and press the ‘+’ icon to add a new APN.

If you’re using a Samsung device, tap Settings, ‘More networks’, ‘Mobile networks’, then Access Point Names. Next, press the Settings button on your phone, then tap New APN.

Reaching the ‘New APN’ creator should be similar on most Android devices.

Go to your APN settings, tap New APN, then use our list to add the Access Point Settings for your cellular provider

Once you’re on the screen where you can add a new APN, you’ll need to enter the APN settings for your cellular provider. Thankfully, you don’t need to go scouring the internet looking for them, as we’ve listed the APN settings for every major network right here at AndroidPIT.

Just find your network provider in the list, add all the settings that need to be added (ignoring the ones that say <Not Set>), then tap the Settings button and Save.

How to free up memory on the Galaxy S5 to get more storage space

The Galaxy S5 might not have sold like Samsung wanted it to, but it’s still a smashing device with a strong following. It has been out for a while now, and you might find that you’re constantly running out of storage space and don’t know what to do. Follow our guide on how to free up storage space on the Galaxy S5.

IMGL9089 2
Learn how to free up storage space on the Galaxy S5!

Delete unwanted pictures, music and videos

Okay. It’s an obvious solution but you might not be aware of just how much space all of this stuff takes up. For example, where do you think all of those WhatsApp pictures you are sent get saved? No, not the magic WhatsApp filing cabinet, they’re all saved in your internal storage.

You can assign WhatsApp to automatically remove media after 30 days, but other media you will have to hunt down yourself. Go to apps > my files > and tap images, audio, videos, whatever you want to remove. After this, tap and hold on an item – it will become highlighted. Highlight as many as you want and hit the “trash” symbol to delete them.

androidpit galaxy s5 storage space delete media
Go to apps > my files > and delete items from whatever folder you want. This is also the place to check out what type of files are taking up the most space.

Get a cloud storage app

This solution will also help you free up space used by your media. We’ve already provided a list of the best cloud storage apps for Android and it’s something you should really think about. In most cases, you can set these apps to automatically backup any photos you take: this means that you’re safe to delete photos from your device storage at any point, and they will still remain backed up in the cloud if you wish to view them again later. An elegant and hassle-free solution.

The methods will differ depending on the backup method you use, but in Dropbox’s case, go to the Dropbox settings in the app and switch “camera upload” on. Any pictures you take in future, and all of your previous pictures, will get backed up, meaning you can delete them from your device once they’ve been uploaded, saving you more precious space.

androidpit galaxy s5 storage space dropbox
Once you have downloaded a cloud storage app, you can move files there by highlighting them (tapping and holding on them) then hitting the options button, then “move” – your cloud app will show up as one of the destinations.

Remove unused apps

If you don’t want to install yet another app as recommended above, you might consider uninstalling some apps. Apps come in various sizes, with big-budget games usually taking up the most space. If you aren’t making use of an app any longer, why have it installed? Removing apps is a simple procedure and a quick-and-easy way to free up space. You can always grab them again later if you want to.

androidpit galaxy s5 uninstall unused apps
Tap apps > then the options (3 dots) button > then tap the apps you wish to uninstall. The ones without a minus sign can’t be removed, sadly.

Make use of an external SD card

One of the beauties of Samsung’s Galaxy series is that it traditionally means devices comes with a space for a microSD card. This can essentially act as another hard drive for your smartphone, meaning you can move pictures, videos, and even app data to be housed there instead of in the internal storage. You will need to buy an SD card, but you can pick them up in various sizes from Amazon.

androidpit galaxy s5 storage space move to sd card
You can move apps to your microSD card by going to settings > application manager > tapping on an app and hitting “move to SD card” on the following page.

For media files, go to apps > my files > tap options (3 dots button at the top right) and select “move” to put them on your SD card (if you have one). Nice.

Clear app data

Clearing app data can save you some precious megabytes, but it comes at a price. When you “do stuff” in apps, Android saves data – this can be your preferences, habits, anything you have done in that app since it was freshly installed.

Think of it as all of your “personalizations”, so that you can re-enter the app and pick up where you left off. While this data is good for apps which you often use, if there are apps filled with data which you haven’t touched for a month, it’s not so useful.

Go to settings > application manager > tap an app and on the following page hit “clear data”.

Nexus 5 battery tips: 6 to make your charge last longer

The Nexus 5 has never been known for the quality of its battery, and it’s seen its fair share of problems in the past. As the device is well over a year old now, a few battery life issues may have started creeping up on it. If you’ve ever asked yourself “why does my Nexus 5 run out of battery so quickly?” then you have come to the right place. Here you’ll find our top Nexus 5 battery tips to keep your device performing at its best.

androidpit nexus 5 usb 353
Check out our Nexus 5 battery tips to help you get the most out of your handset.

1. Turn off “adaptive brightness”

It should come as no surprise that the display is the biggest source of battery drain on the Nexus 5 – a quick look in Settings > Battery should tell you this. You might think that a solution is to have your battery constantly adjust for optimal brightness, but the reality is that the Nexus 5’s light sensor is nowhere near sophisticated enough to adapt effectively. Instead, it is far better to use the lowest brightness setting that is comfortable for you. This will often be lower than what the Nexus 5 adjusts to automatically.

androidpit nexus 5 battery tips adaptive brightness
Go to settings > display > untick “adaptive brightness” and set the brightness level yourself.

2. Set “sleep” to the lowest number possible

As your phone display is often the biggest battery drainer, switching your screen off will certainly improve battery life. Ideally your phone display would turn off whenever you aren’t looking at it, but this is yet to be a properly functioning reality. Instead of leaving your screen on for 5 minutes after you stop playing with your handset, make sure it’s awake for the shortest amount of time possible. Try setting it to 15 seconds for maximum benefit – your battery will thank you for it later.

androidpit nexus 5 battery tips sleep
Go to settings > display > tap “sleep” and then set it to the lowest number you are comfortable with.

3. Turn on Battery Saver

The Nexus 5 Battery Saver function is a one-stop-shop for saving juice. Unlike the battery-saving features on Samsung’s TouchWiz or Sony’s Xperia UI – the stock Android one-tap solution provides an instant improvement to battery life. The cost of this, however, is that a number of functions are limited, such as the ability for the Nexus 5 to vibrate, or sync your accounts effectively. Having to open your email manually to check your email might be a small price to pay for a longer-lasting handset.

androidpit nexus 5 battery tips battery saver
Go to settings > battery > tap the 3 dots (options) button at the top right of the page > battery saver > tap “on”.

4. Keep your Nexus up to date

With the exception of the odd battery-nerfing bug, Android updates usually mean better battery life. By just having Android 5.0 Lollipop on your device, Google says that you extend your device’s battery life by an additional 10 percent, so it’s worth checking regularly for the big L update if you haven’t got it yet. Go to Settings, ‘About phone’, and finally to ‘System updates'; if there’s an update available, your Nexus 5 will let you know.

androidpit nexus 5 battery tips update
Go to settings > about phone > system updates > tap “check of update”.

5. Turn off Bluetooth, NFC and Location

All of the above features can have an adverse effect on your overall battery life. Bluetooth and NFC especially should never be kept running when you’re not directly using them. Location is a little trickier because it is used for a number of apps and services. Turn it off, and if you are rarely/never asked to switch it back on, you will know you have made the right choice.

androidpit nexus 5 battery tips nfc bluetooth location
Go to settings > more > tap NFC to switch it off. Go to your quick settings and tap Bluetooth and Location so that they are no longer highlighted.

6. Choose a static wallpaper, and limit your number of widgets

Animated wallpapers may look sexy, but they’re not energy-efficient. Choose a dark static wallpaper for best results. While you’re at it, make sure the number widgets in operation is as low as possible. Each widget you use will be updated in the background and this is something that will silently take the life out of your handset. Limit your widgets, people.
